Most of us are doing the best we can with the tools we're given but avoidance doesn’t eliminate problems... The Reason You're Finishing 2025 With Anxiety

I wasn’t anxious because I was broken, I was anxious because I was operating from outdated mental programming. Back in 2024, I doubled my business from what it was in 2023. I was earning the most money I’d ever earned and growth was explosive (on the outside)...But I'll never forget one morning when I was having a coffee at my local cafe and I got hit with a wave of intense dread and anxiety for the week ahead.I was looking at my calendar which was packed from early in the morning to late in the afternoon for the rest of the week.On the inside, I was anxious, burning out and feeling a deep sense of shame. You get wound up emotionally and you forget how to think clearly and rationally.And that's the real problem when it comes to managing your state of mind.We suffer not because difficult things happen, but because we lose ourselves in the stories we create about them.<h2>The Reactive Trap</h2>It's so easy to get swept up in our emotions.Whether that's your individual emotion or collective emotion.You wake up, check your phone, see the news, and within minutes you're spiraling.Your heart's racing. Your mind's running worst-case scenarios. You're imagining what you'd do if it happened to you or someone you love.Then you open Instagram and everyone's got an opinion.Some people are angry. Some are scared. Some are pointing fingers. And before you know it, you're lost in it.You're not present anymore. You're not in your actual environment. You're trapped in a mental story about something happening somewhere else.This is what I call the reactive trap.And it's emotionally exhausting.The thing is, most people don't even realize they're stuck in it.They think their anxiety or anger is justified because "the world is going crazy."They think their stress is normal because "there's so much to worry about."But here's the hard truth: <ul><li>Your stress and anxiety isn't just about what's happening in the world.</li><li>It's about your relationship with yourself.</li></ul>I spoke about this with my clients on our regular Monday coaching call this week.<h2>Deep Listening</h2>Let me teach you something that took me years to understand.There's a difference between "hearing" and listening deeply.Hearing is passive. You hear the noise. You hear the thoughts. You hear the opinions.Deep listening is active. It's conscious and it's intentional.Deep listening is about connecting with the present moment without judgment, without attachment, without the constant mental noise your mind loves to play out.Here's an example of what that looks like in practice:When you're trying to meditate and you hear a noise like a truck driving past, dishes clanking in the kitchen or your neighbor's lawnmower through the window.. you have two choices.Choice 1: Create a story about it."This is ruining my peace. Why do they always make noise when I'm trying to relax? This area is so noisy. I can't do this. I need to move somewhere quieter."You just spiraled. You created a whole mental narrative about what a sound means. And now you're suffering.Choice 2: Just listen.Hear the sound as sound. Without layering meaning onto it. Without making it wrong. Without needing it to be different.Just let it be what it is... Vibrations in the air, momentary phenomena arising and passing away.That's deep listening.And it's not just for listening, it's a feeling process as well.<h2>A Personal Example</h2>Let me give you a personal example of how this works.My daughter Coco is three years old. Last week, we were at the shops and my wife and I decided she should use the toilet before we drove home.Logical parent decision, right?So I took her to the bathroom.She said she didn't want to go but I wasn't really listening.I thought: She needs to go so she doesn't have an accident in the car.She started crying. Resisting. Saying no.Then I stopped.I got down to her eye level. I held her hand. And I actually listened."I don't want to go to the toilet," she said."Okay. We wanted you to go so you don't have an accident in the car. Can you hold it until we get home?""Yes, I can hold it.""Alright. I trust you."We went home. She was fine.The point isn't about toilet training.The point is how often we try to force things because we think we know better.We force the world to be a certain way.We force our emotions to be different.We force reality to match our expectations.But when we slow down and actually listen (really listen) there's often a wisdom already present that we were too busy to notice.<h2>Your Energy Is Everything</h2>Here's what I want you to understand:<ul><li>You can't change the world.</li><li>But you can change yourself.</li></ul>I learned this years ago when I was 17, smoking too much weed and diving down conspiracy rabbit holes with my mates.We'd sit around talking about how the government was controlling us, how the system was rigged, how everything was fucked.Then one day I asked myself a different kind of question:"If all this is true... if the system is rigged and the world is controlled by malicious forces... what can I actually do about it?"The answer that emerged was surprisingly simple:<ul><li>I can work on myself.</li></ul>I can't change the government (nor do I want to).I can't single-handedly reform broken systems. I can't control what other people think or do.But I can control my own energy.I can choose to become a positive frequency in a world that desperately needs more of them.That's something I've lived by ever since and it's allowed me to become a person who can help others and provide meaningful service to the world.Think about it like this:Imagine the world as a giant sphere, and each of the 8 billion people as small spheres.Each of us vibrates at a certain frequency... positive or negative, calm or chaotic, reactive or responsive.The only sphere you can truly control is your own.And when you change your frequency, you change your little corner of the world.You become the calm person in the crisis.The voice of reason in the argument.The presence that others can lean on when everything feels unsteady.<h2>What To Do Right Now</h2>In the wake of tragedy, we need this practice more than ever.You don't have to have all the answers. You don't have to solve the problem. You don't have to perform perfect emotional regulation while your heart is breaking.But you can practice awareness.You can notice when you're getting reactive.You can choose to respond instead of simply reacting.You can ask yourself better questions.Here's what I want you to do:<ul><li>Practice deep listening today and for the rest of the week.</li></ul>Find a quiet spot. Close your eyes. Listen.Don't judge the sounds you hear or the feelings you feel.Don't create stories about them. Just let them be what they are.Listen to the world outside... the traffic, the birds, the wind, the voices in the distance.Then listen to the world inside... your thoughts, your emotions, your body sensations.Just listen. Without attachment. Without judgment. Without trying to change anything.Notice how you can find peace when you stop fighting with reality.That feeling isn't dependent on external circumstances being perfect.It's available to you right now, exactly as things are.And the world needs people who can access that peace, hold that space, and radiate that frequency... <h2>How To Upgrade Your Mental Operating System</h2>Fifteen years ago, I was struggling with my mental health.Overthinking every conversation.Replaying every interaction on an endless mental loop. Anxiety about things that hadn't even happened yet. Deep insecurities about who I was and whether I was "good enough". I was people-pleasing my way through life and changing myself into whatever version I thought others wanted me to be.And I was using drugs and alcohol to cope with the overwhelming pressure of trying to fit in and "be normal".I was 17 years old, and I knew with absolute certainty that I didn't want to live like this for the rest of my life.I knew there had to be a different way.What I didn't know back then was I wasn't just dealing with "anxiety" or "overthinking." I was running on a shitty mental operating system (OS). My Mind's OS was outdated, low quality, and honestly, a bit fucked.And no amount of forcing my way through life was going to fix it.I needed to have a fundamental upgrade in my mindset.Today, I have had those upgrades, I'm not necessarily a different person, I'm just operating with a new mental system.I have a wife who loves me, kids I adore, a business I'm proud of, and the mental clarity I once thought was impossible. They try to control their emotions through forcing themselves into a different state.This leads to distractions, avoidance and unhealthy coping mechanisms.But that only fuels the overthinking, the rumination, and the negative thought that pops into their head.Sometimes this approach works temporarily. For a day. Maybe a week.Then they're right back where they started.Why? Because they're trying to fix broken hardware with the wrong tools.Think about your phone for a second. If your phone is running off an old system and you need to update it, it's gonna start to crash and bug out. You don't try to download new apps and hope for the best. Sometimes you might try to turn it off and on again but that's only a temporary fix as well.The best thing is to give it the full system update it needs or even upgrade to a whole new model. Your mind works the same way (even if your ego doesn't like to admit it).Before you can change your thoughts, your beliefs, your emotions, or any of the mental chaos swirling around in your head, you need to upgrade the system that's running them.This is what I call Mind OS: Your mental operating system.And just like a computer, it has three layers that all need to work together:REGULATE: The Hardware Layer (Your nervous system and physiology) REPROGRAM: The Software Layer (Your thoughts, beliefs, and identity) RESET: The Behavior Layer (Your habits, actions, and daily routines)When all three layers are upgraded and aligned, that's when real transformation happens. That's when you go from anxious and reactive to calm and unshakeable.<h2>My Wake-Up Call at 17</h2>I'll never forget the moment I realized something had to change.I was 17, sitting in my room struggling to sleep after another big weekend of drinking to get that weekly release I was so familiar with. The anxiety, the overthinking, the constant feeling that I wasn't good enough, it was all still there. The alcohol just made me forget about it for a couple days but it came back with a vengeance on Sunday evening.Underneath all of that chaos, there was a quiet voice. A small awareness that whispered: "I don't want to live like this."I didn't have answers. I didn't have a plan. I didn't know what to do or where to start. But I knew, with absolute certainty, that there had to be a different way to live.That awareness was everything. Because before you can change anything, you have to become aware that something needs to change.You have to develop what I call a fundamental connection with your own awareness, your consciousness. This is the starting point for everything.Without awareness, you're constantly reacting to life, your thoughts and your emotions.You're a passenger in your own life, being driven around by old patterns, old beliefs, and old programming.With self awareness, you become the driver of the vehicle.<h2>The Practice That Changed Everything</h2>It wasn't long after that moment, I stumbled upon meditation. I found it by reading a blog post on spirituality one day, and I decided to give it a try.So I started practicing. Every single day. Even when I didn't feel like it. Even when it felt like nothing was happening. Even when my mind was racing and I couldn't sit still for more than 30 seconds.I kept showing up.And over time, slowly, gradually, almost without knowing something began to shift within me.I developed a stronger connection to my own awareness. I became more conscious of what I was doing, what I was feeling, what I was thinking, what I was saying.And here's the insight that changed my entire life:Self awareness gives you self control.When I was aware of what I was doing, I could actually change it. When I could see my thoughts happening in real-time, I had the power to choose different ones. When I noticed my emotions rising, I could respond instead of react.Before awareness, I was drowning in my mind.After awareness, I learned to swim.But here's what took me 15 years to fully understand: awareness alone isn't enough.<h2>What I Wish I Knew Then</h2>Awareness was the foundation. It was absolutely essential. But awareness was only the first system.Over the last 15 years, I have discovered through trial and error, through countless failures and breakthroughs, that real transformation requires three systems working together:<h3>System 1: REGULATE Your Hardware</h3>You can't think clearly when your nervous system is in fight-or-flight mode.I learned that all the meditation and mindfulness in the world won't help if your body is stuck in survival mode. You have to regulate your nervous system first. You have to build a calm baseline before anything else can work.<h3>System 2: REPROGRAM Your Software</h3>Once your nervous system is regulated, you can actually start reprogramming your thoughts, beliefs, and identity. This is where you rewrite the old scripts, change the internal narratives, and install new software. But it only works when System 1 is stable.<h3>System 3: RESET Your Behaviors</h3>You can't think yourself into a new identity. You have to behave yourself into it. This is where you build the habits, routines, and discipline that lock in your new operating system. This is what makes the transformation permanent.When I finally understood that all three layers needed to work together, when I stopped trying to just meditate my way out of anxiety or think my way into confidence, that's when everything changed.My relationships improved.My business took off. My internal experience shifted from constant background anxiety to baseline calm and alignment.I became the man I always wanted to be.But it took me 15 years to figure this out.<h2>The Truth About Transformation</h2>Here's what nobody wants to hear: real transformation takes time.There's no magic pill. How I Upgraded My Mental Operating System (And How You Can Too)

I used to get the worst hangxiety ever.It was a big problem for me for a long time.Not the “I feel a bit embarrassed” kind of anxiety...The full-blown, stomach-dropping, existential dread kind.I’d go into a drinking session already anxious because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to control myself. Then I'd wake up the next day feeling like an absolute sack of shit.It was fucked. That environment shaped the way I viewed drinking long before I ever knew about the real impacts it can have on your life.So even though I was getting hammered every weekend, deep down I had this fear:<ul><li>“What if I become an alcoholic too?”</li></ul>That idea created anxiety and fear.<ul><li>Fear of losing control.</li><li>Fear of becoming someone I didn't want to be.</li><li>Fear of going down the same path that tore my family apart.</li></ul>That was me. Every weekend.And it destroyed my confidence.<h2>The Year I Went Sober Changed Everything</h2> Eventually I drew a line in the sand and (after many failed attempts), I made a commitment to going sober for a full 12-months.No drinks. No excuses. Nothing.And that year changed my life.Here’s what I learned:<ul><li>I learned that I could make a decision and stick to it.</li><li>I learned that I could face my fears and deal with my emotions.</li><li>I learned that I had way more control than I thought. </li></ul>I also developed a new level of self-confidence that was unmatched by anything I'd ever felt before.There's really something to be said about making a choice and backing yourself on that choice.When I came back to drinking after that year, it was completely different.I had completely reshapred my entire relationship with alchohol. I could now choose how I wanted alcohol to fit into my life instead of letting it control me. <ul><li>I wasn’t afraid.</li><li>I wasn’t trying to escape myself.</li><li>I wasn’t using alcohol to numb anything.</li></ul>I was finally drinking from a grounded place, not a chaotic one.<h2>"Drink Responsibly" Isn’t Sexy, But It Works</h2>Let me be clear: if you want to avoid hangxiety, you can’t keep drinking like an idiot.Here’s the rule I follow:2 drinks = sweet spot 3 drinks = fun 4 drinks = the beginning of a slippery slope It’s not a strict rule, just good self awareness.If you know your sweet spot, you can stay balanced. If you ignore your numbers, be prepared to face some demons.Back in the day before I quit drinking for a year, I knew these numbers, but I had no self control to stick to them.Now I have much better self control and can stick to them.If I let myself go these days, it's a choice.<h2>My Hack: Self-Acceptance</h2>This is the real reason my hangxiety disappeared.<ul><li>It wasn’t supplements</li><li>It wasn’t electrolytes</li><li>It wasn’t “drinking water between drinks” (although that does help)</li></ul>It was self-acceptance.Most people wake up after a night out and immediately attack themselves:<ul><li>“Why did I do that?”</li><li>“I fucked up”</li><li>“I’m such an idiot.”</li><li>“Everyone probably thinks XYZ.” </li></ul>That’s what creates the hangxiety... the internal war. So here’s my fix:Pre-frame the session with self-acceptance.I will literally give myself a pass if I know I'm going to have a big one.It becomes a conscious choice I make instead of a reactive behaviour I have no control over. This removes the internal battle.And when there’s no battle, there’s no anxiety loop.<h2>If You Drink, OWN it.</h2>The worst nights I ever had were the ones where I “accidentally” drank.Not planned. Not conscious. Just following the crowd or drinking out of stress.If you’re going to drink, make it a conscious choice.If you wake up hungover, the story becomes:<ul><li>“I made a choice. I had fun. I’ll recover” </li></ul>Not:<ul><li>“I’m out of control.” </li></ul>When the story changes, you stop spiralling.Again, I want to make a point that I NEVER used to be able to do this.I had to go sober for a year and face all my demons to get to this level of conscious self control.But here's the thing I hear from a lot of my clients who struggle with drinking.They say, "I don't want to quit drinking forever" or "I still want to be able to have a good time".And I think that's fine however you've gotta be real with yourself and where you're at.I can do this now but there was a time when I couldn't.So you've gotta get real about where you're actually at and be honest with yourself.<h2>My Last (Non-Professional) Tip: Hair of the Dog </h2>This is not professional advice.This is just honesty...If I’m really hungover, sometimes I’ll have a drink the next day.Only if it's "tapering off" instead of building up to a bender.It's not to escape, it's just to smooth the landing.It actually prevents the anxiety spiral, because you're&nbsp; not being dropped from 100 to zero.Your physiological system actually gets a bit of a cushioning (if you've already hammered it anyway).Again: not medical advice. Just real life and the truth.<h2>Coming Full Circle</h2>My relationship with alcohol has come full circle completely.There was a time when one drink guaranteed twelve, and twelve guaranteed panic, shame, and anxiety the next day.Now I can have a couple drinks, enjoy myself, stop early, go home, and wake up totally fine.Not because I’m a different person... But because:<ul><li>I learned to deal with my emotions.</li><li>I healed old wounds around alcohol.</li><li>I practice self control.</li><li>I processed the shame</li><li>I embraced self-acceptance </li></ul>And I stopped making drinking mean something about who I am.The less internal conflict you have, the less the alcohol has to amplify.And when you actually feel safe in your own mind and body, even alcohol can’t shake that.<h2>If Drinking Triggers Anxiety, This Is Your Next Step</h2>Alcohol isn’t the real problem.
