This Meditation Secret Ends Overthinking In Seconds
I’m 32 now but I've been meditating since I was 17 years old.
I started because I was an anxious teenager who wanted to get back in control of my mind.
I knew that my mind was supposed to be this super powerful thing, but I didn’t know how to harness it properly.
I wanted to be the master of my mind, instead of being mastered by my mind.
Over the last 15 years since I started practicing, I have learned a few secrets about meditation.
In this post I want to share one of them with you…
If you prefer to watch, you can check out the video version of this blog here:
Let me tell you about the one thing people get wrong with meditation that causes them to “fail”.
Most people think you have to stop thinking completely and if you can’t do that, you’re failing.
That’s not true.
Meditation is not about stopping your thoughts completely.
Meditation is about creating some distance from your thoughts.
You will always have thoughts, but you need to learn how to be less attached to them.
My 4-Step “Secret”
1. Be conscious of the thought
2. Acknowledge the thought
3. Accept the thought
4. Redirect the thought
This sounds simple and when you get it, it is simple.
Try this next time you find yourself spiralling…
Be conscious of your thoughts.
This is stupid but most people are thinking unconsciously…
If you were truly conscious, you wouldn’t allow negative thoughts to take up space in your head.
To be conscious is to be aware.
When you’re aware, you have choice.
If you could choose, you wouldn’t think negative thoughts.
Here’s the truth: You can choose (we’ll get to that a bit later).
Acknowledge your thoughts.
If you have doubtful, worried, fearful or angry thought…
Acknowledge it by labelling it.
- “This is a doubtful thought”
- “This is a fearful thought”
- “This is an angry thought”
When you label thoughts, they lose control over you.
It’s kinda like shining a light into the dark… you won’t be scared anymore.
Accept your thoughts.
Stop trying to fight your negative thoughts because “what you resist, will persist”.
Instead, learn to accept your thoughts by breathing into them and allowing them to be there temporarily.
When you breathe out, let go.
You don’t need to continue carrying the baggage from your past.
Redirect your thoughts.
Once you have become conscious of your thoughts, labelled them and accepted them, you can now redirect them.
Ask yourself a simple question, “what would I prefer to think?”
Then direct your thinking to the preferred thought.
Bonus Step
Think beautiful thoughts.
Think loving thoughts.
Think prosperous thoughts.
Once you learn the secret of meditation, you learn that you can focus your thoughts on whatever thoughts you want to focus on.
Where focus goes, energy flows.
